Institution Profile

The National Trust for Scotland is a conservation charity with more than 300,000 members. Established in 1931 to protect and promote the importance of Scotland’s natural, built and cultural heritage, the NTS’ portfolio ranges from coastlines to castles, art to architecture and wildlife and wilderness – including grand estates such as Culzean Country Park in Aryshire, iconic landscapes like Glencoe, monuments such as Glenfinnan and industrial heritage like Robert Smails’ printing works in Innerleithen.

Collection Interests

The women who have been found and forgotten in the story of Scotland, which includes those who lived and worked in tenements, in rural burghs, weaving cottages and printing shops. This includes land and estate owners like Mairi Sawyer of Inverewe, Ishbel Hamilton-Gordon of Haddo House and Miss Christian Dalrymple of Newhailes House. Photographers, including those who practiced, like Margaret Fay Shaw of Canna, and those that compiled albums, like Violet Brodie of Brodie Castle, to those who aided others, such as Elisabeth Hornel of
Broughton House. Patrons of art, interiors, and architecture, like Janet Rochead of Newhailes, Ann Hamilton of Brodick and Beatrice Sharp of Hill of Tarvit. Plus, heritage and conservation advocates, such as Lady Antonia of Newhailes, artists, like Mary Lorimer at Kellie and Margaret Macdonald of the Hill House, and
traders, like Isobel Johnstone and Bessie Cunningham of Gladstone’s Land.
