SWARN promotes visibility and knowledge of historical creative women in Scottish collections through improved identification and documentation of their work and increased public access.

Our activity centres on knowledge exchange and facilitating development of collaborative initiatives between members such as exhibitions, public programming, print publication and digital projects.

Our aim is to devise innovative, inclusive and sustainable routes to showing work by women in our collections that meet the needs of our diverse audiences.

  • To enhance the visibility of women makers in the fine arts, design and craft in public collections in the West of Scotland, especially those who cannot be easily categorised within traditional canons of art history, or whose work survives isolated and scattered.

  •

  • To promote public access to the work of female makers in innovative, inclusive and sustainable ways.

  •

  • To support documentation, conservation and preservation of this work through sharing of resources and expertise, including grant capture.

  •

  • To increase research capacity and curatorial knowledge of this work through the involvement of student/volunteers in specific, task-led projects.

  •

  • To disseminate and debate this knowledge to diverse audiences through public programming, online activity and print publication.
