An exhibition celebrating the work of Margot Sandeman (1922-2009) opens today at Cyril Gerber Fine Art in Glasgow.
Next year marks the centenary of the artist's birth and this will be the gallery's third exhibition of Sandeman's work. Her works on paper will be the main focus of show, some of which acted as preparatory pieces for larger oils, giving us an insight into her artistic practice.
Her close friendship with Joan Eardley (1921-1963) will also be highlighted with the inclusion of Sandeman's portrait of the two artists as well as a number of pieces by Eardley herself.
Margot Sandeman, Road to the Sea, oil on canvas
Born in Glasgow in 1922, Sandeman went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art until 1945 when the Second World War cut her training short. Despite this, her vivid works won her numerous awards ranging from the Royal Scottish Academy's Guthrie Award to the Laing Award, and she was an avid contributor to exhibitions across Scotland from the RSA, Cyril Gerber, Compass Gallery, Talbot Rice, and many more.
Poetry & Harmony runs until 1st September and the entire exhibition is also available to view online here.
